In winter, rose blooms are usually large and full, with firm petals and a rich fragrance. However, in Taiwan’s summer, due to intense sunlight and high temperatures, the flowers tend to be smaller, with fewer petals, lighter fragrance, and sometimes even growth issues. These are all natural phenomena.

Guard Petals / Nutrient Petals
The outer petals of roses are often yellow-green or darker in color, similar to the outer leaves of cabbage. Their main function is to protect the inner petals. These naturally formed petals are not defects. If customers do not prefer them, they can simply be removed without affecting the quality of the bloom.

Black Edges on Red Roses
The guard petals of dark red or burgundy roses often appear with black edges, which is normal. Except for some imported or hydroponically grown varieties, most red roses will naturally develop black edges. In winter, cold winds make the black edges more noticeable; in summer, they are less common but may still occur.

Other Causes of Black Edges

• UV exposure → Petal cells are damaged and easily oxidize, turning black.
